Who is Hary Reid

The Washington Post has a pretty good article about newly-elected Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). Not terrific, though; it describes Tom Daschle as 'media-savvy' and describes his 'flair' as a speaker. If there was anything Daschle lacked, it was 'savvy' or 'flair' of any kind in any form.

As for Reid, he's a pro-life Mormon who grew up in a coal-mining town, used to box, and is a former police officer. He also supports a ban on flag-burning. Not to worry; he's famous for putting the party above everything else, and my hope is that he represents the socially conservative wing of the Democratic Party that formed the backbone of its working-class movement for many years.

Dick Durbin (D-IL) is the new Senate Minority Whip, is famous for his tough interragtory skills and fiery speaking. If we have some power in our words maybe we can regain some of the fire in our hearts.

Of course, it still leaves open the question of who will run for president in 2008. That's still wide open, and honestly I have no idea. I'll just throw out some names:

- John Kerry
- John Edwards
- Al Gore
- Howard Dean
- Barak Obama
- Wes Clark
- Hillary Clinton
- Bill Richardson
- Al Sharpton (Won't happen. But wouldn't it be great?)

I'd like to comment one by one on your "ideas" for 2008. John Kerry - once a loser, always a loser. John Edwards - he's not even an elected official right now. Al Gore - see John Kerry and add even more boring. Howard Dean - too liberal and I honestly question his sanity sometimes. He's good for the party, but not as a presidential candidate. Barak Obama - he'll only have 4 years of experience (Edwards couldn't do it with 6). As much as I hate to say this, I think the first African-American President will be a Republican. It's just how things like that work. Wes Clark - I doubt anyone still remembers who that is. They certainly won't care in 4 more years. Ike was the last general we elected way after his notoriety, and he was Supreme Allied Commander during WWII. Hillary Clinton - there are too many people out there who just hate her. Bill Richardson - way past his prime. Al Sharpton - he can run all he wants, but he has no chance of succeeding. I don't think we'll find out for at least another year what direction the Democratic Party will be taking, much less who any candidates for 2008 will be.
